At the 2024 Stockholm World Water Week, Blue Peace Middle East (Blue Peace ME) showcased its leadership in promoting transboundary water cooperation in the Middle East, one of the world’s most water-stressed regions. Held from August 25-29, Blue Peace ME’s key session, titled "Advancing Transboundary Water Cooperation: A Holistic Approach in the Middle East." ". Eng. Maysoon Al-Zoubi, Chair of the Blue Peace ME Managing Committee, emphasized the need for an integrated approach to water management, highlighting the initiative's new Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystem (WEFE) Nexus strategy.
The panel discussion featured senior experts from Iraq, Türkiye, and Switzerland, alongside Blue Peace ME Youth Ambassadors, demonstrating the initiative's commitment to intergenerational dialogue. A key highlight was the presentation of the Water Footprint Assessment, which revealed the region's total water footprint of 263 billion cubic meters annually, underscoring its vulnerability to climate change.
Throughout the week, Blue Peace ME Youth Ambassadors actively participated in four additional sessions, provided fresh perspectives on topics covering WEFE-Nexus, transboundary water management and sustainable water futures in fragile contexts, also contributed to a youth debate on water resilience and security. The Blue Peace ME delegation engaged in numerous bilateral and multilateral meetings, focusing on river basin management, youth engagement, and innovative partnerships. They attended various sessions, talk shows, and social events, contributing to discussions on climate change, water governance, and sustainable development goals.
This year's World Water Week reinforced Blue Peace ME's role in fostering regional cooperation and highlighted the critical importance of integrated approaches to water management for peace and sustainability in the Middle East
