Smart Desert

The Syrian refugee crisis has resulted in an increase in unemployment and growing poverty within the country of Jordan. Many Syrian refugee men find work as hired farm laborers in the sector while women are involved in home-based activities like food processing. The International Labor Office has emphasized the importance of improving working conditions and providing training for both workers and employers on farms to reduce vulnerabilities.

In Jordan, agriculture contributes to 4% of GDP, while employs 15% of the workforce. It also consumes a large portion of the country’s water resources of up to 75%. To address these challenges Jordans agricultural policy has shifted towards management of water resources ensuring food sovereignty and promoting exports.

The Smart DESERT project is being implemented by a group of organizations led by IUCN. Its main objective is to enhance income stability Syrian beneficiaries throughout the year by providing assistance to farms and processing units supporting entrepreneurship initiatives and improving working conditions. Additionally, the project aims to diversify production methods promote farming practices and create employment opportunities.

Funding for the Smart Desert project is provided by the French Development Agency, while its implementation is carried out by IUCN, Blumont, Horizons for Green Development, Greentech and INWRDAM as in partnership, with the National Agricultural Research Center.
