The rapid growth of population and high unemployment rates pose a threat to socio sustainability in the SEMED region. The scarcity of water resources leads to shortages and insecurity in food supply, while the increasing population contributes to the loss of land and natural ecosystems. The region is also experiencing the impacts of warming with July 2021 being recorded as the month ever.

Projections indicate that climate change could result in a GDP decline ranging from 6% to 14% by 2040. Additionally, the COVID 19 pandemic has further impacted the economies of SEMED countries and the broader Islamic community causing an estimated GDP loss of one trillion USD. These challenges worsen food insecurity with one out of every three people lacking access to food in 2020. It is expected that food insecurity will increase in the SEMED region due to population growth and limited water resources.

To tackle these challenges effectively decision makers must gain an understanding of the issues at hand. Improve policies and technical expertise accordingly. It is crucial to foster communication and regional dialogue along with implementing practices and having a grasp of the existing policy framework is also essential. The proposed WEFE Nexus Hub encompasses a knowledge hub as project identification and implementation components.

Involving the sector is vital for overcoming limitations and promoting innovation as well as job creation. The objective of this project is to enhance water, energy and food security, for both socio wellbeing and environmental sustainability.

The goals involve creating a group of people who share knowledge and expertise, improving the formulation of policies and experimenting with ideas through trial initiatives. This encourages an encompassing and unified strategy, towards achieving development.
